Thanks for visiting!
John, The new site looks great. Looking forward to seeing your progress on ""Tantalus""! Tim Lackey www.triton381.com www.tritondaysailor.com
Loved you web site.... I also have a CD28 (Hull 27) known as the Minx and I just love her. Did I see a steering wheel on your CD28?
Great website & photos Bill Wyatt CD33 "QWYATTLY" on Lake Murray SC
Although my Dad was on the sea for fifty years and I've always loved the water, I never got into sailing until 1989. Since then it's all I can think about. Last August i bought a 19977 Cape Dory 25, Hull #541, which I'm just about finished refurbishing. I love looking at pictures on sites such as yours and can't wait until i launch mine next month in San Diego. It's been a long, hard year (heart attack and a stroke) but it's been worth it. This is a great site and I've gained a lot of knowledge as read and reread all the information you have posted. Thanks for such a great site and allowing me to see a beautiful sailing vessel. Sincerely, Dana Vincent
Jon, thanks for the great pictures and info. We just sold our 25, after buying a CD 30 "Slow Dance" from Joe Sankey in AL. I'm sure you have see his post on the Board. He's a fine guy. I'm sure gonna miss the 25. She sailed so wonderfully. Took me a while to learn and appreciate the true sole of this boat. Best Regards, Chuck & Grace Gardner, CDSOA, Gulf Coast Fleet
Jon... love your new site... but I also loved the old one with beautiful little Sovereign.. you will love bigger sister even more after you get her in top shape. Zeida Cecilia-Mendez, CD/33 Bandolera II ex-CD-25 Bandolera
John, plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose. We're grateful that your commitment and wisdom are finding a new forum. Beautiful deck and teak work, and pretty fancy html there, pal. Carter Brey s/v Mary Ellen, CD25 # 762
John Tantalus is in great hands. Best of luck with all your projects! A pleasure in owning a Cape Dory is always greater than her physical needs. I look forward to further entries on the Cape Dory Theater page. Chris Cram CD 30 C Hesperus
Love the site. David Frazier aboard "Moxie Girl" 22CD Tallahassee Fl
Nice site... and nice boat! I especially like your idea for the nav table. Guess I need to get started on one of my own now! Glenn SV "Obsession" CD270 #8
Nice job on the wet core repair. How long did it take? Mark Abramski
On ther gel coat cracks (and other minor leaks that you will find each and every year due to stress, etc, x Cure (I think that is the proper name) Comes in a small squirt bottle, and works like a charm. As you probably already, most of our CD 28s have cracks in the gel coat, especially on the cabin top. With this stuff, all you have to do is use a cleaner on the crack (mineral spirits, or something nastier if it is dirty or growing green stuff that sometimes happens on boats in the northwest) then apply a squirt of this stuff in the crack. Seals it up pronto, and you can go over the crack with the same stuff in a hour or so. Hope this helps Ken Cave , CD 28 #227 Dragon Tale Anacortes, WA
Enjoyed the content of your site. We have a CD31, and are learning to sail, and to enjoy sailing, on the lower Rappahannock River and Chesapeake Bay. David, S/Y Nunki
Great site! Fair Winds... Ryan s/v Intrepid, CD 28 #346
Love your site and it is so great to see your handwork. I'm bookmarking this so my husband can see it when he gets home. We also use Cetol but have Mahogany. Therefore we use a little Minwax red stain (we like red Maple better than the mahogany stain, color) and then go to town with the Cetol. Yours looks great! Debby Vallette, CD 30 Cherokee, Chesapeake

John, Very nice presentation... Ed Walsh
Jon, Love the new site. I see you are diving into this CD just like you did with Sovereign. By the way, where has the old site gone? I, and I'm sure other CD25 owners would often refer to it for projects similar to yours.
Nice job! I have a CD28 #331 in the Bahamas Thanks, Robert Morey
I love what you have done to "restore" this great boat. I had a typhoon, CD-25 and then a CD-28 thru the 70's. Then the kids decided they did not want to go boating every week-end so I packed it in. Bought a Typhoon two years ago and loving it. Although a CD-28 keeps coming up in my dreams. Living in Southern Maryland on the water. I will be checking back in to see how you are doing. Keep up the good work.
Hi John the boat looks like BRAND NEW! good luck and hope to see it in Scituate this year
John, You did a great job restoring the boat. Congratulations. Looking forward to seeing you at the rendezvous. Gary Lapine Selkie (Like the one on your house top.) CD30C,#339 Aucoot Cove, Mattapoisett MA
Nice job! John Walsh CD 28 #177 "Liberty"
Capeeeeeeetahhhhhhhhhnn John Sir John- Nice web page and site. I learned about the God and his som etc. I think I will name my boat titus andronicus as it cuts the waves and penetrates the sea with no merceeeeeeeeee. Captain Eddeee likes this site and so do I. Nice photo of the launch and see yah at the mooring -Charlie the magician is not who I am!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Good day amigo Rich
Great photos. How did you find navigating without RADAR? Looks awfully soupy out there! Was it as cold as it looks? Keep on sailing, Ken CD/36 Parfait Raleigh, NC
Great photos of Maine. I haven't been able to get back there for about 5 years but your pictures brought back many fond memorys. Thanks for sharing them. Jerry Laudermilk Cottontail CD 30 #321 Scituate, MA
John My wife and I are former CD25 and SS23 owners and are back on the east coast (North Shore, MA) and starting to look for a boat. We have two little girls (4 and 6)and are very interested in a CD28. We love Cape Dories and are interested in a CD28. However, with the kids, we think we would prefer to have wheel steering instead of the standard tiller. Would you give me your thoughts on wheel vs. tiller? I noticed that your boat had a wheel. Did you install it or was it made that way? I really appreciate your thoughts. Our e-mail is:... Thanks Mark P.S. Tantalus looks like a beautiful boat!
We have just purchased our first sailboat and are so pleased to have found a Cape Dory 28 Hull #16. As new owners we are just beginning to understand and appreciate how wonderful this yacht is. Thank you for this site as a great point of reference. Geoff and Kelly Britt "Lost Together" (formarly "Katy") Lake Charlevoix and Lake Michigan await!
I really like your site! I've owned three CDs: TY Weekender, 22, and 25. The photos are beautiful! Regards, Troy Scott
She looks great, and your restoration and repairs are helpful! I've decided that a CD28 is the boat, will wait and see what the surveyor has to say, then off to the Bay. Bill Watson
Enjoyed your web site. I'm considering a CD 28 myself Greg Giles
I sometimes wonder if I really own a CD-28, Encore. It is (hull # 79) and so different from Tantalus (hull # 241). I must say that all the changes in the design over the years of manufacture were big improvements, for example; the forestay attachment, the (lack of) holding tank and the water tank placement, your two quarterberths and a shelf instead of the one quarterberth and one sliding-out quarterberth with an extra too-small fifth berth, the ice cooler placement, the diesle tanks and their placement, the change from formica bulkheads to your wooden interior, the change from plastic hatches to bronze, and so on. Still Encore is nice and good-enough for me. Thanks for all the information. Steve Paulson Lenore, ID
Man, you have some GREAT pictures on heah! Congrats on the gorgeous looking CD28 and your work, and web site.... Well done, Cap'm, I see you have a good strong crew to do all your bidding:) Keep us posted what'chur up to Matey! Best, Yves http://www.tinyradio.com/saltwater.html
As a new owner of a CD 28 Hull 314, I am amazed and the lessons and enjoyment I have gained from reading and studying this site. Thank you. David Coulter, Raleigh
Great new pictures - enjoy the site, getting good ideas for Kittiwake. Bill Watson CD28 Kittiwake, Annapolis
Living on Block Island my whole life and never going on the mainland, I really enjoyed other ocean views.
HI, WELL I THINK YOUR TANTILUS IS ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL. I HAVE A 25 HULL 447 AND SHE'S BEEN ON DRYDOCK FOR A FEW YEARS. YOUR PHOTOS ARE GREAT AND MAKE ME DREAM BACK WHEN I SAILED HER IN A LARGE LAKE IN PENNSYLVANIA. NOW SHES IN NEED OF LOTS OF TLC OR A NEW OWNER. IF YOU KNOW SOMEONE IN THE MARKET FOR A 1977 25 CD. DROP A LINE. HAVE LOTS OF FUN SAILING. THANKS FOR THE VEIW. MARYELLEN
I have a nice old cd 28-hull # 13-in New Bedford Mass-havn't stripped the bottom as it has no blisters-have done eveything else-including a re-wire-new fuel tanks and rebuilt engine and new gear box-also have backed up the chain plates with aluminum-redone all the upholestry-rigging and sails-etc.-with a wife and 2 kids the boats a bit small but perfect for singlehanding-I also kept the self tacking jib and added a hank on genoa and cruising spinnaker-I doubt I am as much of a perfectionist as you are-I realize one can work on a boat indefinetly and indeed there are many peolpe who never get to put ther boats in the water at all-I focus on upgrading one "system" per year-which has resulted in my putting in about $1,500-$2,000 per year into the boat for 15 years- so like you-"its not for sale"-good job!
Cool site, very cool boat. I want one
John, Great Website!! I will be back many times I'm sure. Thanks for your quick response to my TYPHOON thru hull question. I have had the boat almost two years and love it. I have sailed it many times, a few of them in heavy weather, and never leaked a drop. It is a very seaworthy boat for its size. However once I really looked at the thru hulls and saw how they were set up I don't I could be comfortable until they were changed as you suggested. Just goes to show "Ignorance Is Bliss" Have A Great Day! Tom
Jon, Great site I really enjoyed the pictures and DIY articles. If we see you in Maine we'll plan on taking you up on your wine offer to keep the gods happy.. Rodd & Cara Kaibar - Casco Bay
Hi guys, we owned and sailed our 75 CD28 for 13 years. It took us up and down the Hudson to Lake Champlain, down the east coast to the Exumas(2 times) and up the coast nearly as far as Canada. It also took us to where we live now, Camden Maine. A fine boat which I did several modifications to. We now sail the coast of Maine in an older boat, 1961 Alden Challenger we call CHRISTMAS, their first fiberglass boat. I've seen your posts on the CWBB and hope we may run into you on the water. We get down your way as well and love your cruising ground. Tom Young, Rockport Maine
Hello, nicely done, one of the best!!! I found your refit of Tantalus very informative I have a capedory 30 that I purchased in april of 2003 my previous yacht was a c&c 25. thanks for a lovely site. I am the new owner of a CD 25, hull #660, ERRANT ONE and will sail out of Annapolis, Md.
Hi- I just bought a CD28 1979 boat from Virginia named Cleopatra. She has not been in the water for 4-5 years and was very dirty, sails and all. There has been evidence of leaking aroung the interior sheathin, so I have removed all the toe rails, stanchions, all deck hardware, so that all can be rebedded. Also, the rear deck is rotten , so I am cutting it out from the top to remove all rotten core and will rebuild and refinish deck. The dorades had been moved and improperly sealed, hence the rot. Also the cockpit floor is very bad at the rudder post and about 1/2 way back. I am going to remove the top non skid area and recore w/glass. Where did you get your dodger? It looks very nice and I do not have one. Very nice website and a beautiful boat- thanks for all the great info. Best, Mike
What a well assembled web site! Thank you!
Please contact me if you wish, I have just purchased a CD 28, and want to get feedback regarding conversion to wheel steering. Thank You, Jeff Winter
What a great site and a great old boat that you have restored. I have a Grampian 30 in South Jersey that I am restoring. We have done quite a bit of sailing between Point Pleasant and Cape May. Hope to go farther in the next few years. I lived in Brunswick, Maine a few years when in the Navy about a century ago. We still vacation in New England just about every year. Fred Jaekels
Great website....you no doubt love your vessel. we sail out of Irondequoit Bay on Lake Ontario near Rochester NY. We sailed o Typhoon for 11 years took a 9 year break and bought CD 28 "Donnybrook" with old reliable and vibrating FARRYMANN DIESEL. Installed new bronze port windows...original equipment were plastic leaking ports. Really love this tub. Hope to see you on the open seas some day. Ben and Astride Schifano
Nice to see such good-looking guys enjoying a sail. Got to you by looking up the story of Tantalus. Great name for a boat !! -- She's beautiful ! From one Canadian (Victoria, BC) beached in the eastern Rocky Mountain foothills .......to several others, HO, BOYS !!
Fairport Harbor Ohio Sailing the best little boat ever made Cape Dory Typhoon .Its late fall here. You have a real nice boat keep on living the great life. Sailing good old lake Erie HOW SWEET IT IS
Thanks for sharing! Inspirational indeed. The best of luck.
As someone seriously considering the purchase of a CD in 2006, I found this site interesting, informative, and fun. Thanks
Thoroughly enjoyed your website. I keep my Typhoon in Newburyport, Mass on the Merrimack River. If you are ever up that way feel free to give me a call. I can easily arrange for a free mooring and a free ride on Alberg's smallest gem, assuming I can steal a ride on that 28' beauty of course. Keep the cyber cruise's coming. It makes a long dark New England winter day a little brighter. Tim Mertinooke Cape Dory Typhoon #1851
Thank You!!!! I very much enjoyed reviewing your site...will return and refer to others ...good workmanship and insights offered here...take care and good sailing ....
I have visited your site many times and it always puts a smile on my face. Thank you. Luanne Long , Lake Wateree, SC
John, Wonderful site, and great job with your energy and talents with Tantalus. We have sailed Alchemy,(The search for the elixir of life...), CD28 #289 for the past 18 years on the Chesapeake. The Nav table is now a must. Thanks for all the tips. Great to read all your visitors comments, esp re trips to the Exumas. Would very much like to drop anchor at Stocking Island again. Fair winds and good joss. Ed and Pat Mc
Great site, good luck with the 'Plan B' when you come to sort it... Alan Flying Fox Troppo.co.uk
This was an excellent visit! I can really sense the great fun on the water your crew and boat have shared together. Thanks for the effort to pass it along to me! Christina
John, You are a 'Oner'! A photographer with 'the eye' and a writer with a twisted sense of humor. I am ever so grateful to the gods for granting me the senses to appreciate both. Didereaux the faux cajun
Love your album especially your cruise to New England. Did the same trip some 20 years ago in a 26 foot Meridan (Phil Rhodes Design). Now looking to bid on a Cape Dory 28, a hurricane damaged boat in Mobile, Al. I may be contacting you for advice on restoring her. Nice presentation. John MacHaffie
John, Great mix of humor and content. Your discussion about barrier coating is about the best I've ever seen. Don Casey's got nothin' on you! You're pretty good with the HTML too. Great site. Carl Thunberg CD25 - Concord Coach
I've enjoyed your site; especially the photos. Linda "Chartley" CD27 #114, Buzzards Bay.
Great job on web site and work you have done. Capt. Henry Atlanta Ga
Hello fellow CD 28 owner. This summer a purchased a 1982 CD28 hull #321. She's wonderful! Thanks for all the insights. I'm sure I'll be referencing your site often. Frank & Viktoria
Like your site and Tantalus. Can't beat an Alberg design. The Alberg 30's were built in Whitby Ontario by Whitby Boat Works where I live today. We are sailing a Grampian 26 out of Whitby. Happy Sailing Geoff
John Great web site . You sure have done a great deal of work on her and she looks great.I have completed a lot of the same work so know how much effort has gone into it. This year is the deck painting and cleaning up the bright work. We got it down to clean wood a couple years ago but last year the weather was so bad we did not get a coat on it . So this year some extra sanding. Only December but want to get at things however we just bought a bit of a project house so my winter is taken up with inside projects. Yours Phil Shedd Gamblin' CD 31 #25
Excellent site. I'm using it as the basis for some of the upgrades on my CD 25D. I like the "Starboard" backing material on the seacocks. The new traveler install helped me figure out how I'll install the turning blocks on the deck of the CD 25D. I'll use the holesaw technique to get the balsa core out before I fill with West System. Overall a very educational site. Please keep adding new material. Jeff Giles CD 25D
John, I really love the boat. She is beautiful. I am hunting a good 28 myself. Keep up the work. Keith
Hi John and the others, I just discovered your fabulous website and sincerely congratulate you for a wonderful presentation. I am a former Connecticut yankee who once sailed a Cape Cod Knockabout in the waters around Stonington, Mystic, Fishers Island, etc. Now about 65 years later, at the age of 82, I find myself the new owner of GUD2SAIL, Cape Dory 28 #144 Yanmar 2GM20F, which is on stands near Pasadena, MD soon to be sailing in the Chesapeake. I am part way thru some deck repair, teak varnishing, engine "learning" etc. Dixon
Cap't. John and crew...very nicely done, a wealth of info...just purchased hull # 131, "Beau Quest" from Castine, Maine owners this fall(06)...Timmie and I have been talking about buying a boat for a number of years. The owner of a CD 27 and established client of mine (I am a residential restoration contractor) wanted me to undertake a project on their summer place in Castine, on the water just up from Maine Maritime Academy. I resisted untill he took me sailing last summer (check out his website@http://picasaweb.google.com/TColadarci/CastineConstruction02). Using the owner as a resource, I inquired as to costs, availability of boats like his. He pointed to "Beau Quest" two moorings down and said She'd just been put on the market...long story short in two weeks we were the new owners. Despite the suggestion in the web site, we did not use money from the project to pay for the boat, but after a most recent entry, I will figure a way to exact retribution. Again, thanks for a fun virtual sail, and hail us when next you visit Penobscot Bay. Alan and Timathie Arbo
